Harper Valentine: Following Your Own Path (Exclusive Interview)
From Australia with love: an eye-opening incursion into a career where confidence and self-awareness are crucial.
Australia-based “mattress actress” and spicy content creator Harper Valentine is an example of how one’s passion can become purpose.
Being an adult content creator, a Jerkmate cam model, a pro photographer and a podcast host requires serious time management skills and infinite inspiration.
For Valentine, it all boils down to nurturing positivity and being unapologetically authentic.
Turning Obstacles into Opportunities
The story begins five years ago, on April 30th, precisely. Harper Valentine was working in the music industry and already had a small following.
“I was dating a photographer, and who could resist taking some naughty shots when you have a photographer as a partner?”
Still, the 28-year-old Aussie content creator was evolving in a male-dominated industry and realized she’d get attention if she did something cheeky.
“That (plus my rebellious streak) led me to posting a topless picture straight to my Instagram wall… my page was promptly deleted.”
By the sheer will of fate, Valentine came across OnlyFans, which appeared to be the solution to her challenge of standing out without jeopardizing her audience’s viability while unlocking a considerable extra stream of income.
“I was obsessed straight away. Who doesn’t love boobs and money?”
Valentine used to work 60-hour weeks in the music/venue industry and fell in love with making content on the side. Her drive and passion made her forget the tight sleep hours until an important decision was made.
“Eventually, it just wasn’t sustainable to do both – so I left my career to pursue porn full time. That might be the best decision I’ve ever made. Not just because it’s given me the most amazing life, but also because Covid hit less than two months later, and my previous industry fell apart, and I wouldn’t have had the means to survive through that period.“
With timing and opportunity at hand, Valentine saw her life transform from night to day. Her knowledge and abilities matched her spicy, creative energy, and her newfound public and media ecosystem seemed like a breath of fresh air.
A Tightly Knit Routine
“I’ve never found it difficult to be inspired – being lucky enough to genuinely love and be excited about my job means that I pretty much always have a flow of new ideas to play with and things I want to try.”
When it comes to finding juicy ideas, Valentine also chats a lot with her fans, who help her get going even when the spark is less present.
“I have ADHD, so I do definitely have some pretty strict rituals that keep me on track, but nothing as exciting as you’d hope. I’ve just gotten REALLY good at managing a calendar mostly, haha!”
Valentine has a tremendous number of spreadsheets where she adds all her future video ideas, fan requests, collaboration plans and more. She confided to OnlyNews that she wouldn’t be where she is today without such discipline.
“Without my diaries and spreadsheets, I’d probably fall apart in a few days (seconds, even), so I work really hard to make sure I’m always on track to make sure I’m pumping out exciting and high-quality content, keeping up with daily posting, multiple videos a week, cosplays… there’s a lot to keep track of!”
Connecting with Fans: A Double-Edged Sword
Harper Valentine’s position on fan engagement reflects her knowledge of the industry. Sensitive to the root causes of burnout and mental health decline among adult industry workers, the Australian model believes that engaging with fans should be made with precaution and self-awareness.
“A lot of people are really successful with little-to-no connection with their fans. REALLY successful. Think of any major porn star – do you think they’re at home chit-chatting with their 2 million fans on a Saturday night? Unlikely. I think that’s why so many fans seek out down-to-earth creators in the first place. A sort of confirmation bias, really.“
With “amateur” being one of the most searched terms across adult sites and phone-shot content ranking among the biggest sellers, it’s no surprise that OnlyFans has become what it is today: a multi-billion dollar business. Achieving success as an adult creator comes with the challenge of maintaining enthusiasm, energy, and willingness to engage with fans. For Valentine, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.
“It’s actually way more lucrative to pursue your career in a way that suits you, and I wish more creators knew that they could be successful within their boundaries.”
Understanding your fans’ interests and engagement can help you find the most viable approach as a creator. While some fans love to connect, others are only interested in the content, and some will get off across the many shades in between (being roasted, praised, begged, or simply ignored.)
“You can find success through a variety of means, and you should follow one that is best for you and makes you thrive. Then you also attract the type of fans who have that same preference, and nobody has to fake it.“
Her Advice for Balancing Life
Valentine admits she could have a better work/life balance, but she just doesn’t want to. In fact, she’s actually made an active effort to blend her job and life together because it makes her happy and works for her.
“Even when I do find time off, I often spend it doing something work-related, like getting behind the camera to capture something fun with a friend, dressing up in cosplay or investing time in my not-for-profit projects–media initiatives and sourcing necessary work items for underrepresented and/or survival sex workers.“
Although Valentine wouldn’t recommend her lifestyle to everyone, here’s some advice to adult creators out there.
“1. Learn to communicate, listen and understand where both your and others’ boundaries and work life end, and what strengths and weaknesses this opens you up to.
2. Not everyone is going to throw their whole heart into it and that’s cool! Let go of that expectation and look out for people who do mesh well with your work style.
3. Try to stay away from the industry’s social politics if you can. Learn when it’s important to make a stand and practice not getting too emotionally involved where it’s not helpful, even when it makes someone dislike you.
4. In our industry attention is money. Your empathy and passion are such strong and vibrant forms of attention–make sure you put them in the right places and don’t forget to save some for yourself.
(4.5) Don’t let the wrong people use it. Believe me, they will try.”
Valentine told OnlyNews she might be in a place one day where she wants to pull back and find more separation, but right now, her situation suits her just fine.
Finding Yourself
Across the years, Harper Valentine’s biggest struggles have been finding herself, comparing herself with others, and self-doubt.
“I think this is a feeling echoed amongst our industry. It helps to put it on the table and to give others a safe space to do the same. Eventually, you realize we’re all just silly little electric meat sacks wobbling around, trying to do our best with what we have, and that’s both humbling and inspiring to me.“
Overcoming self-doubt and defining her boundaries has helped Valentine cultivate and thrive in a positive environment where people can be unapologetically themselves.
“I’m incredibly proud of and motivated by creating a safe and enthusiastic space for people: creators, fans, clients.”
Quirky Skills
On a lighter note, Valentine can surprise her fans in many ways, including unusual physical feats:
“I folded myself in half and peed in my own mouth on camera once. I might try it again now that I’ve remembered it. I can also fit my whole fist in 2 out of 3 holes.”
